After a number of RV stays where we paid premium prices for modest accommodations, Maverick Ranch RV was a ray of sunshine. For the incredibly low price of $15 a night, we spent a month with great amenities and fantastic views, all within driving distance of Big Bend National park. This resort gets my very highest recommendation!

A beautiful park

Maverick Ranch is part of a larger resort called Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa. We didn’t spend a lot of time there but it includes a very nice hotel, restaurant, bar, golf course, pro shop, cafe, spa and more. The golf course looked especially lovely when we toured the grounds. One of the benefits of this being a classic resort is that the RV park maintenance is done to professional hotel standards. This means everything is cleaned daily and kept in good repair.

The whole area around Big Bend National Park is gorgeous and dramatic. It’s a desert landscape punctuated by rocky hills and mountains jutting up out of the desert everywhere you look. The view from the park is no exception, a huge bluff behind the park is surrounded by multi-hued hills and cliffs. Every time I jumped out of the Airstream I was struck by its beauty and inspired to head out for adventure. It’s the second best park view we’ve had in our adventures to date. Since its far from the city, the skies are very dark and perfect for star gazing on a clear night.

Speaking of the location, it is about a half hour drive to get to Big Bend, but every mile of it is pretty. Lajitas is not much of a town in and of itself. Their mayor is a beer drinking goat and the resort is pretty much the only business in the town. There is a small grocery store Terlingua which is about half way to the Park that has a surprisingly good selection. Terlingua is not a big town either but they have the bare necessities covered. In both cases the locals are friendly and tourism seems to be their bread and butter.

This is the main clubhouse where you can find the laundry, pool, lounge, showers, and common room.

Plenty of comfort

The clubhouse is a large, hacienda-style building with a huge common room, a plushly furnished TV room, and multiple bathrooms with private showers. Behind it is a walled in pool area surrounded by lush grass and attractive trees. The wall surrounding the pool stood out as one of the few things on site in need of some TLC as portions of it were crumbling. The pool was not deep enough for swimming but was large enough for a good number of people to lounge in it to beat the Texas heat. Since we were there in the winter months, it didn’t see much use.

The sites were all nice and level with hookups that were in great shape. They only issue with the grounds is that the desert soil becomes a thick and very sticky mud when it rains. If you stick to the pavement you will be fine, but wander off it the stuff sticks to your shoes like concrete. The grounds themselves are not the prettiest, but the fantastic view more than makes up for that. The remote location means both the park wifi and cell service is pretty sketchy. Both options were slow and had a tendency to cut out intermittently.

Finally, there is the price, which is absolutely fantastic. It’s about the lowest price we’ve paid per night and yet the park is among the nicer ones we’ve stayed at. It’s a fantastic bargain and if we find ourselves in Big Bend again, there is no doubt where we will be staying.
