Both the lawns and trees were very lush. At night the whole place comes alive with the sound of insects and frogs.
The Details
Trail and I have never stayed at a park quite like Bull Run Regional Park. It is part of a regional parks system in Virginia that is a partnership between a number of counties, cities, and local private groups. Their focus is to provide outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors and locals. The RV park itself and the surrounding woodlands are large. The road through the park is perhaps a mile long. In addition to the wooded areas, there are a number of vast grassy fields.
There is even a small water park called Atlantis, which is located inside the park in a walled compound. It is run by the same public agency, Nova, that runs the park itself. If you are staying in the campground, you get half off your entry fee. We decided to take advantage of this on our last day. While it’s a modest water park, at $4 per person after the discount, it was worth while to play and relax there.
The sites themselves are pretty big, and each has a fair amount of privacy as they are surrounded by woods on three sides. This would normally make for a quiet park, but our part of the park was near to a gun range so we had gunfire going most of the day. It wasn’t loud enough to hear inside the trailer, but outside it was a constant distraction at our campsite. We had a hard time leveling our Airstream on our campsite due to a pronounced side to side slope. The flatness of other sites appeared to vary pretty wildly, from nice and flat, to slanted like ours.
Here is the Atlantis Water park. It has pools, slides, and a cool splashing water play area. We had a good time with it.
We encountered quite a few animals which is always nice. Deer were common, but we also saw a large fox, and an owl during our stay. Overall the grounds are attractive and you really get a strong camping feel rather than a parking lot feel here. The park is located very near the Manassas battlegrounds. It was our good luck to arrive at the anniversary of Second Manassas and the National Park was running a lot of once-a-year tours and presentations.
The price is very reasonable, all things considered. I would definitely recommend staying here when in the area for a short or long term stay.
