Traveling south toward New Mexico, we decided to take a chance with Lathrop State Park at Colorado. I knew going in that we’d only have 50 AMP hookup, no water, and new sewer — in exchange for trails and pretty lake views.

For $24 a night you get a pull-through 30/50 AMP site at the Piñon Campground of Lathrop State Park. If you book online, they charge you a $10 processing fee for the transaction. If you don’t have a Colorado State Park Annual Pass, you also have to pay $7 park fee per day. So per day, it works out to $36 per day for us. This is a horrible deal for no-sewer and no-water site. Which is sad, because I want to like this site. You can make reservations from May to October, but from November to April campsites are first-come-first-serve.

When we settled in, I took a quick run to the nearby restrooms and was a bit disappointed especially after seeing the ones at Chatfield State Park. The bathrooms typical campground ones: no light at night and cold water only. Showers are in a separate area and require quarters. The campground sites are also open in the cold of winter, but not the main bathrooms. If you’re brave enough to do winter camping, you’re stuck with pit toilets.

We enjoyed nice view of the Spanish Peaks from our Airstream and could easily access trails from our campsite. Hogback Trail takes you on a ridge that looks down at the two lakes within the park with the peaks in the background. In walking distance there’s access to fishing, swimming, boating and even golf. They also have horse trails, hunting areas, birdwatching, and an archery range.

I mostly liked the view and trails, but they weren’t stunning as I hoped and sorely wished for water-sewer hookups. Sadly I can’t give it a better score and reluctantly recommend Piñon Campground at Lathrop State Park, Colorado.
