We decided to stay at Shady Grove RV during out visit to White Sands National Monument. The weekly rate was excellent and the location looked good, just 20 minutes from White Sands. The fact they only took Cash or Check was of some concern, but it turned out to be well worth the extra trouble of getting cash. It’s not fancy but its a nice park at a great price.

The Details
Shady Grove is a smallish park located in a suburban neighborhood of Alamogordo. It has a dual character in that part of the park is dedicated to long term tenants and another to RV travelers. The portion dedicated to long-term residents looks a bit run down, but the short timer area looks to be very newly landscaped and is reasonably attractive. Because it is in a suburban area the park is surrounded by houses rather than nature, and there are no fences or hedges separating the park. Thus there isn’t much of a view nor sense of park-like tranquility about the place.
Shady Grove’s strong suit is that it offers good RV parking spots, with full hookups, at a great price. They even throw in free cable at no extra charge. It’s also a convenient location, close to food and shopping as well as many local attractions, both natural and manmade. It is somewhat no frills beyond your actual site. There is a small laundry in the office but no public shower/restroom, no rec room, no pool, no dog walking areas, and no playground. Considering the price, that’s all fine by me. The laundry is the convenience we most often and most need.
The wifi was functional, but only of marginal quality and had the usual tendency to get spotty at peak usage times or when the park was tending to full on the weekend. Even in low use times, it was pretty slow, even for casual web use. The Cash or Check only thing is a little inconvenient but ultimately not a problem. Probably the most annoying aspect of the park is the ambient noise. You get barking dogs, some street noise, trains, and because it is located near a busy air base; jets and other aircraft passing by from time to time.
All said, it’s nothing fancy, but at less than $20 a night, full hookups and a good clean site are more than enough to get a recommendation from us. If you are looking to visit White Sands it’s a great place to stay.
